Job Title: PCP Product Engineer (Market Support Centre)
Full time permanent position based in the West of Ireland.
Salary: negotiable DOE
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
Manages and executes projects and activities involving the integration of (existing and new) application testing, product characterisation and market trends in order to support the Advanced Materials Business Unit with specialisation on polycrystalline products in a cross-functional team, comprising the following departments within the company:
- Sales and Marketing
- Research and Development
- Production and Quality
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Honours graduate in appropriate engineering discipline. Post graduate qualification in a materials or mechanical engineering discipline would be advantageous.
- Preferably, significant post qualification experience and in-depth understanding of general machining technologies and an understanding of polycrystalline super hard materials; covering sintering, tool manufacturing and behaviour in application.
- Preferably a sound understanding of cutting, wear theory and associated tool manufacturing processes as well as a broad knowledge of relevant scientific and technical literature.
- Effective team player with the ability to combine their specialist knowledge with that of others to develop optimum solutions to complex problems.
- Effective communicator with the ability to engage and motivate people in a dynamic environment.
- High degree of competency in presentation skills, both graphical and oral is required.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS - main aspects of job
Market Support Responsibilities
- Liaise with various Business Units teams, managers and external collaborators to understand short and medium term operational, tactical and strategic objectives, functional capabilities, and external customer and end user requirements.
- With the Broader team of applications engineers, responsible for technical customer queries regarding tool manufacture, product application and performance, including troubleshooting and optimisation and providing written reports where required.
- Along with other PCP engineers, responsible for maintaining a portfolio of competitor analyses in terms of material composition, structure and performance and where appropriate, advising Research and Development and Sales and Marketing of new materials, application areas and potential threats and opportunities.
Research and Development
- Contribute to the development and refinement of structure-to-properties-to-behaviour models for polycrystalline cutting materials with a particular emphasis on tool wear behaviour in both application and tool fabrication.
- Where possible and where relevant, to represent the customer technical requirements in cross functional R& D team.
- Collaborate with PCP engineers to design and analyse experiments and wear behaviour tests aimed at testing and developing behaviour models with particular emphasis on product behaviour in tool making and application.
- Collaborate with PCP engineers to define and develop appropriate evaluation tests that ensure that new products meet performance criteria of intended application.
Production and Quality
- Where relevant, to contribute to the resolution of non-routine issues that may arise from time to time in production and quality inspection and consult customers.
- Where relevant, contribute his/her understanding of product behaviours to process development teams charged with capability improvements and/or cost reduction programmes.
Technical collaboration
- Based on understanding of BU needs and internal capability, should help identify potential technical collaborations with tool makers and external research institutes, such as technical universities in order to develop company technical understanding or competency and/or to help maintain awareness of developments in the field.
- Where involved in external collaborations, must ensure that all possible legal and confidentiality requirements are presented and known to the company’s legal representative(s).
Project Management
- Design and carry out projects, along with short-term activities, involving internal and external resources with due regard to quality of work and time frames.
- Manage analytical jobs and applications jobs in the departments’ laboratories though the use of relevant systems and procedures.
- Manage and coordinate external research and development projects, such as customer collaborations and university projects.
- Uses project management tools (such as TPS-Lean, Six Sigma and Microsoft Project) to plan and manage projects within budget constraints.
