Our language training and translation business has been involved in translation and linguistic validation work for medical research institutes through Life Science clients for the past 7 years.
Our role involves testing the language of patient-facing questionnaires used in clinical research, to ensure that the final questionnaires are comprehensible and linguistically appropriate.
To date, our language validation work has seen us assist international research groups in assessing the language of medical questionnaires for a wide range of conditions in the Irish population, Arthritis, Breast Cancer, Alzheimer's, Crohn's disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Polymyalgia Rheumatica, Multiple sclerosis, Obesity, child cancer, to name a few.
Our role is to find out if the target language used will be understood in a real-life scenario, to find out if it is clear, are the words understandable, would certain age groups understand the terms used etc.
For our current research piece we need 5 families affected by PHA (child/teen aged 7>18 (patient) and a parent) to assess over the phone the English of a questionnaire related to PHA). We offer a €45 incentive fee for the family, or the respondents can opt to donate this to your charity.
Respondents are asked to explain their understanding of the questions in their own words. This will ensure in the final research setting there is no issue with the language concepts or that language concepts might be misunderstood by the target groups thereby delivering skewed results.
Respondents must be first language English speakers and resident in Ireland. (Parental consent and patient release forms will be required.)
Questions are provided in advance for pre-review, before the phone interview, but caregivers/patients must not look up or dictionary, check the wording or be coached on the definitions.
